As one kind of applied language variety, journalistic English employs various skills to spread news and to satisfy the demands of different readers; hence it has formed its own style from long-term practice. With the development, its denotation extends from news reporting to editorial and feature stories. Feature, with long length, is used to balance the seriousness of the newspaper and takes small proportion originally. However, in order to compete with TV, radio and Internet, newspapers begin to emphasize feature for the purpose of attracting readers' attention. According to the content, feature can be divided into profile, WHAT-feature, locality feature or personal experience feature and so on. By depicting appearance, personality and deeds of the news-maker, profile is aimed to entertain, humanize and inspire readers.Throughout the survey of previous research on journalistic English at home and abroad, it is found that profile has not enjoyed its due attention and there is no works concerning a systematic and comprehensive analysis of its stylistic features. Based on the theory of modern stylistics, the present thesis is an attempt to analyze stylistic features of profile reporting systematically and comprehensively from graphological, lexical and syntactic levels. In order to be representative,60 profiles are collected from mainstream newspapers in Britain and America from 2007 to 2009, with the reporting targets as the successful people from various fields. The author establishes a corpus of 90,216 words on the basis of these texts and has obtained quantitative results through the employment of modern statistical methods. Ultimately, it is concluded that profile has its distinct stylistic features at graphological, lexical and syntactic levels. The purpose of this study is not only to explore the stylistic feature of profile, but also to shed light on the English learners' comprehension and appreciation of journalistic English, modern western culture and value as well.
