Stylistic Reproduction In The English Version Of Red Sorghum From The Perspective Of The Theory Of Stylistic Markers

Red Sorghum is Mo Yan’s masterpiece which narrates the heroic story happening in the Northeast Gaomi Township during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. Brave and rebellious, the characters in the novel shook off the bonds of feudal system and fought against the Japanese invaders bravely. The style of Red Sorghum is unique as Mo Yan integrates fictional legends with true historical events.The English version of Red Sorghum is translated by Howard Goldblatt, a famous American sinologist. The target text is fluent and readable. He tries to reproduce the original style as much as possible.Professor Liu Miqing considers that the methods which modern linguistics employs to study literary style are not proper for translation studies. Hence, he puts forward the theory of stylistic markers to recognize the literary style of the source text. Based on the theory of stylistic markers, this paper recognizes the lexical markers, the markers of figures of speech and the textual markers of Red Sorghum. Then this paper analyzes the translating methods, with detailed examples, in reproducing the original style of Red Sorghum. Through case study, the paper summarizes the factors that contribute to Goldblatt’s success and the revelations from it for the "going out" of Chinese modern literature.
