The advent, development and fundamental characteristics of 20th century Chinese literature have a direct and profound bond with Chinese national consciousness. It is Chinese people's desire to explore the ingrained disease underlying the national consciousness evident in the 20th century Chinese literature for the sake of its salvation and reconstruction. The text has chosen as its major object of study national consciousness and 20th century Chinese literature and expounds its views consecutively in four chapters and begins with "the nationalization of literature", backed by the appropriate quotation and commentary of the representative viewpoints and achievements from the study of national consciousness and 20th century Chinese literature by the academic society. The 1st chapter is an introduction, which summarizes national consciousness and the panoramic features and artistic charms of 20th century Chinese literature, analyzes contemporary national consciousness and the situation of study, features and potential space for research of 20th Chinese literature, thus providing the foundation for the presentation of the thesis's main argument and issues to be coped with. The second chapter probes into and reflects upon, from different perspectives, the national consciousness of Liang Qichao, Gao Xu and Lin Shu as well as how they behaved in the revolution of the literary circle, thus classifies their differential cores and organic ties. The 3rd chapter aims at analyzing and generalizing the representations shown from the combination of national consciousness and "national character criticism". The chapter interprets its submerged nationalization nature by the analytic reading of << The Main Story of A Q>> by Lu Xun,<< Snivelling A Er>> by Xu Qinwen and<< Cheng Huangsheng Going to Town>> by Gao XiaoSheng. The 4th chapter offers a comprehensive and systematic elaboration of the ideological connotations of "Literature about Searching for its Roots", which stretches its antenna out into the fathoms of national historical culture, searching among it the distinctive and highlighted nationalized pursuit and rational nature.
