Countless massive peasant uprisings in Chinese history and the victory of Chinese democratic revolution, without exception, show the pivotal status and tremendous strength of Chinese farmers in history. Since the 20th century, as one kind of superstructure, oil painting, has been always concerned about the farmers' social status, living conditions and mental outlook changes. With a sincere pen, it has framed the image of the farmers at certain period of time in paintings, forming the glorious history of China's local oil painting, and displaying its great vitality and strength in future.This paper consists of three parts. The first part, from the point of tracing its source, analyzes the representative masterpieces of the local Western oil painting, intended to provide the source of arts to shape the farmers'image in China's local oil painting.The second part, taking the age as clues, analyzes the the necessary connection between the orientation of modelling the farmers'image and their social status, living conditions and mental outlook at various periods in the 20th century, from which it can be concluded that the transformation of the farmers'image in local oil painting since the 20th century indicates the awakening and developmental process of the humanistic spirit in China.The third part is the focus of this article. It analyzes the rule of the transformation of the farmers'image in China's local oil painting, puts forward its shortcomings in shaping the farmers'image, and illustrates the subjective and objective factors affecting the image-building orientation in the new century paintings. It reaffirms that the richness and variety of the farmers'image in the China's local oil painting is bound to become an important page in the history of Chinese art.
