With the development and deepening of the College English teaching reform, colleges and universities in China are actively using the Network-based College English teaching model built on network technology. The new model gears students'individualized and autonomous learning. More and more attention has been paid to students'autonomous learning. Particularly in computer and Network-based teaching and learning environment, students'listening and speaking ability is closely related with autonomous learning.This thesis aims to investigate current situation of students'autonomous listening and speaking in Network-based College English teaching and analyzes factors affecting Chinese College students'English autonomous learning. It is intended to improve students'English autonomous learning ability in listening and speaking, to provide new strategies and methods for their autonomous learning in Network-based teaching and learning environment.Firstly the thesis introduces related theories of learner autonomy, metacognition and constructivism, describes the development of the Network-based College English teaching. Then it discusses the characteristics of listening and speaking and problems in Network-based teaching. In order to investigate what factors affecting the effectiveness in Network-based autonomous learning, the method of questionnaire and tests are used in this study. Participants included 289 non-English major freshmen selected from China University of Petroleum (East China). Questionnaire involves learns'beliefs associated with autonomous variables, and how do students practice listening and speaking in Lange Campus-Wide Language Learning Platform. The College English listening and speaking pre-test scores are compared with the ones from post-test, and the data from questionnaire is analyzed by using Excel and SPSS software. The results of study show that freshmen have unsatisfying autonomous learning ability. Autonomous learning activities are closely associated with their learning attitudes and motivation. College English listening and speaking academic record is in proportion to the practicing time in Network-based learning environment.The findings illustrate that it is essential to provide students with necessary skills and strategies in the College English learning environment from the initial stage of autonomous learning. According to the results of this study, the author presents specific methods about how to help students improve their autonomous learning. There comes a conclusion that properly using metacognitive strategy can help a learner develop autonomous learning ability.
