The creation of characters is very important for cartoon creation, and a successful cartoon animation product has to depend on the cartoon images with outstanding individuality and active vitality. The symbolism about analyzing the representation of cartoon images mainly take the relevant factors of history, business and culture as precondition. In the paper, the study will make the cartoon animation Snow White as example to conclude the characteristics and rules which are shown by the symbolism of the representation of cartoon images. By the questionnaire survey of how to understand sign glossary, the study of the sign shown by cartoon image and the feeling come from audience are obtained. The conclusions and proposals proposed in this paper can help the designer design cartoon characters.The paper focus on:1. Use synchronic signs and diachronic signs, which are proposed in this paper, to interpret the symbols of cartoon characteristics. Synchronic signs interpret symbols through metaphor or metonymy according to sign attributes. Diachronic signs use time as a unit to encompass the realization of graphics, usually preferring to interpret the underlying concepts through a symbolic approach.2. Using the cartoon animation Snow White as example, from the perspective of message communication, the operation of how images in cartoon affect the depicted content is analyzed with the signs integrate synchronic and diachronic representations in a deep structure.3. By means of questionnaire survey, the common characteristics of cartoon image samples and the common characteristics of the most of cartoon image samples are obtained. The obtained conclusions have practical significance to guide the design of cartoon images.
