Japan is one of the most important allies of the Unite States in Asion now,their relationship is unusual. During the Cold War, Japan is a follower and an ally of the United States and bridgehead of safety of the United States in Asia. It plays an important role in the Unite States. the Unite States'policy toward Japan is particulaiy important. Studying the Unite States'policy toward Japan can better understand and study Unite States'foreign policy and the history of the cold war. Studing the Unite States'policy toward Japan has important theoretical support and construct meaning toward research of international relations, international politics and diplomacy and so on. And studying the Unite States'policy toward Japan in sixties of the twentieth helps us to understand the development of the Cold War and the charicteristics of the U.S. foreign policy especially toward Asian.the Unite States'policy toward Japan is one of the most important the Unite States'policies during the Cold War. As the U.S. diplomatic documents (FRUS) gradually diclassified, American diplomatic documents toward Japan during Johnson administration diclassified in 2006. this paper mainly states the Unite States'policy toward Japan during the Johnson administration. the paper is based on FRUS JAPAN 1964—1968 VOLUME XXIX. It was original archive of researching the policy of USA to Japan ,which included the forming process, basic principle,attitude and content of the Unite States'policy toward Japan. These materials help to clarify development context of the Unite States'policy toward Japan during the Johnson administration and explore the law though the phenomenon. Full use of U.S. diplomatic documents strenghen the academic and practical nature of the paper.These original material is the center of this paper. The paper combined with other important material, it analyzed Johnson administration policy to Japan comprehensivly and thoroughly. The paper mainly studied domestic and international background of formation, process, and content of Johnson administration policy to Japan. It also studied the impact of Johnson administration policy to Japan. I hope that the paper will do some favor for in-depth study of the Unite States'policy toward Japan.The paper is devided into four parts:Introduction : it mainly stated domestic and international acdemic circles'researches in this field. Domestic acdemic circles'study of this question is rather weak. Foreign acdemic circles are lack of systematic study on this issue. While they studied the Unite States'policy toward Japan, only had cursory study on some issues of the question. In this paper, I used some original files and materials, adopted scientific method of historical research, had a more systermeric and comprehensive study of the Johnson administration policies to Japan.The first part briefly reviewed the post-war U.S. policy toward Japan. Namely Truman period, Eisenhower period and Kennedy period of U.S. policy toward Japan.The second part mainly analysized international and domestic background of Johnson administration policies toward Japan. Namely the US-Soviet relations relative ease, the United States continued to hostile to china, the United States expanded the Vietnam war, the rise of Japanese economy and a range of issues the United States facing.The third part was mainly based on original files and materials, it had a comprehensive and systemetic analysis of Johnson administration in political, economic and militery aspect of security territorial policies toward Japan.The fourth part mainly analysizd the impact of Johnson administration toward Japan and evaluation. The Nixson administration had to returned Okinawa and the US-Japan economic and trade frictions showed impact of Johnson administration policy toward japan. At the same time it conducted a objective evaluation toward Johnson administration policy toward Japan from different aspects.Conclusion: the full text was summarised. Johnson administration policy toward Japan mainly showed this: politically, the United States actively seeked Japan's support and cooperation ,and hoped to have a new relationship with Japan; In the economy, on the one hand the U.S. wanted to restrict the Jjapanese economy, on the other hand required close coordination of Japan; militarily, commitmented to protect Japan with force, asked Japan to increse military and defense spending,and asked Japan to meet the united states'military requirement. In the territory, in order to eliminate all kinds of dissatisfaction of Japan, the United States had to face the reality and returned the Bonin Islands to Japan. the United States basically achieved its dipolmatic goal and achieved national interests.
