U.S. stationing its forces in Japan is a part of the U.S.-Japan Alliance, and one of the objects of U.S.-Japan Alliance System. After World War II, to realize its Pacific Strategy and Cold War Strategy, U.S. designed, under the precondition of the Peace Treaty with Japan, the alliance strategy whose core was to set up U.S. forces in Japan. On the base of U.S.-Japan Security Treaty in 1951, U.S. and Japan established the alliance system. Relying on it, U.S. obtained the legal right to station U.S. forces in Japan after the end of the occupation. Since then, "U.S. Forces in Japan (USFJ)" becomes an indispensable part of the U.S.-Japan Alliance System. That is, USFJ is the core of the U.S.-Japan Alliance System which in turn maintains the legitimacy of U.S. stationing its forces overseas. Accordingly, U.S. adjusted the relations between USFJ and the Alliance in the late 1950s, and set down U.S.-Japan Mutual Cooperation and Security Treaty. On the base of new treaty, the relations between USFJ and U.S.-Japan Alliance were improved, and the new U.S. Alliance System became mutually benefit in cooperation and security of the two countries. To consolidate New Mutual Alliance System and harmonize the relations between USFJ and the Alliance System, U.S. and Japan settled the issues concerning with Bonin and Okinawa administration, which were the obstacles to the development of the Alliance for a long time. Therefore, both the U.S. Alliance System and the military cooperation between the two countries were intensified. In the late Cold War, U.S.-Japan Alliance even became a cooperative structure which was well organized and developed.USFJ is an important variable of U.S.-Japan Alliance structure, whose changes determine directly the existence, transformation and development of U.S.-Japan Alliance during the Cold War. Therefore, the studies on the relations between USFJ and U.S.-Japan alliance during the Cold War would be useful in understanding the essence, features and developing tendency of U.S.-Japan alliance in the Post-Cold War.The dissertation mainly focuses on the relations from 1945 to 1972 and consists of the following five parts. The first part discusses U.S. national security strategy and the forming process of its military strategy of stationing troops in Japan after World War II.
