ShenNewspaper Freetalk is one of the most reputed supplements during the period of the Republic of China. Since 1911, it has been published for totally thirty-eight years until May,1949. The long history helps it establish a close relationship with modern literature, which reveals its great literary values that fully reflect on its active participation in the literary movements in modern and contemporary China, as well as the literature proceeding. What's more, it also has first-hand reports and comments on certain events such as reforms concerning the literature in the late Qing Dynasty, the New Culture Movement on May,4th 1919, Literary Revolution, Left-Wing Literary Movement, War of Resistance in Literature and so on and so forth, all of which have left precious record for researches on literary history. As a supplement, FreeTalk has the responsibility to characterize itself with commercial value, which requires it to seek for marketing effects and cater to readers'needs. At the same time, as the most valuable literary supplement, attitudes from FreeTalk toward sorts of literary movements, including features and values of various literature works will be indispensable material for deep investigation into the contemporary literature of China. The paper will carry out a study on the supplement Freetalk from the perspective of the speech freedom, aiming at having a deep and overall analysis on the qualities of FreeTalk as a literary supplement, and also its inclinations and stylistic features respectively in several main periods during its development in order to generalize something in regular.Part One elaborates on the speech freedom brought by ShenNespaper as folk newspaper from the perspective of the construction of public space, and the expectation of speech freedom from its folkness and the characteristics of speech freedom exposed in it.Part Two works on the content and the degree of freedom for FreeTalk in different periods of its development. Its comments on Northern Warlords Government of China in the early years of the Republic of China, or speeches on the involvement of left-wing thought in 1830s, or researches on people's livelihood and democracy all embody the special features of speech freedom from FreeTalk.Part Three expounds on the speech freedom of FreeTalk, which is featured with most free essays. The speech freedom of the special literary style—essay has been overviewed by studying the dimensional visions and artistic characteristics of essays, and also the distinctive values of left-wing essays represented by Lu Xun in the 1830s.The fourth part analyzes the characteristics of other genres in different periods of 'Free Talk'. Studying from the multi translation selection, styles and types of popular fiction, Variety of pure literary creation, the research presents the free speech features of FreeTalk.
