The relationship between human activities and geographical environment is an important research area of geography. Quarrying culture as a product of interaction between human and geographical environment is also has rich connotations of man-land relationship. Zhejiang has a long history of quarrying culture and many sites of ancient quarries have been discovered in recent years. This study based of geography, using comprehensive knowledge and methods of all relevant disciplines such as field survey, literature and interviews, discussing the occurrence and development of quarrying culture as well as its relationship with geographical environment systematically.Quarrying culture is a relatively fixed physical, spiritual and system model that formed gradually in quarrying activities at a certain time and space involved, with distinct material and non-material properties, as well as a regional and historical unity. Quarrying culture is a sub-culture system of stone culture system, which includes the following five components:quarrying object, quarrying way, quarrying site, quarrying motivation and quarrying history and be influenced under both natural and social environment.The quarrying culture in Zhejiang is produced and developed by the combined effect of factors such as geology, geomorphology, hydrology and climate. The geological condition is the prerequisite for the occurrence and development of the regional quarrying culture; the landscape pattern that is "seven tenths of mountains, one-tenth of water and two tenths of fields" has an important influence on emergence and development of quarrying culture; the rivers throughout the land provide a convenient for the transport of stone and is conducive to the spread of quarrying culture; the special climatic conditions along the coast also have some impact on quarrying culture. Quarrying culture produces a certain reaction on natural environment, changing the local landscape, hydrology, vegetation and physical geographical elements. Quarrying activity changes the natural environment mainly through two ways to achieve:the formation of the landscape and the stone uses.There is a complex relationship between social environment and quarrying culture. Science and technology, population and settlement, religion, burial customs, fengshui concepts, place names, literature, and other social cultural factors which all have interrelations with quarrying culture. Zhejiang Seawall (with the main part of the Qiantang River Seawall) is a great water conservancy project built in ancient Zhejiang which has a certain physical geography and social cultural background. With the usage amount of stone increasing, quarrying culture has gained a large development in Zhejiang, many well-known ancient quarries have supplied stone for the seawall.Quarrying culture has a strong regional and folk nature and a certain nature of openness and development, and is material and non-material culture, as well as the integration of geological relic, historical relic and industrial heritage. Quarrying culture is an important part of the regional culture system and its sustainable development has a great significance for enhancing the soft power of local. Tourism development which based on quarrying culture is an effective way for the sustainable development of quarrying culture and avoid weaknesses, highlight the features as well as strengthen community participation in specific process can obtain good results.
