English Translation Of Chinese Dish Names And Study On Its Teaching As A Foreign Language

The study on translation of Chinese dish names plays a significant role in disseminating and promoting Chinese catering culture. The article does some research on strategy and method of Chinese dish names translation,and looks for some perfect translation that can not only maintaining culture elements,but also be acceptable and understandable by people from other countries. According to the importance of catering,the wide usage of catering terms and the worldwide popularity of Chinese dish,the author proposes a new concept of"Catering Chinese",and hopes it can attract attention from other scholars and make further research of it in the future. Chinese dish names are characteristic,which can fully manifest the feature of Chinese language. So the study on Chinese dish names teaching can help a lot for the Mandarin vocabulary and phrase teaching.There are total five parts in the paper,talking about English translation of Chinese dish names and some related teaching items:The first chapter is introduction,states the significance of dish names translation study and analyses the possibility of Catering Chinese Teaching. According to the result of survey to oversea students,the author discusses the problem of Chinese dish names translation and how to improve. This chapter reviews the achievement of Chinese dish names studies in the past. Regarding English translation of Chinese dish names,there are two opinions in general: the first,translate Chinese dish names as the expression in English dish names,namely include material,cooking method and flavor characteristic etc.,mainly uses free translation;the second,emphasizes the culture element and characteristics of Chinese dishes,using literal translation,free translation and sometimes explanation.Chapter two,analyzes the culture characteristic of Chinese catering and the differences between Chinese and Western diet culture,so that we can find out the rule of naming Chinese dishes. Chinese dish names express profound meaning in terse language and Chinese people pay great attention on language skill , mainly reflects in flexible use of rhetoric ,word-matching and elegant words .Chinese dish names are impacted on culture of language,matter,terrain,society and religion. And these are the main differences between Chinese and Western dish names. Chapter three,according to the feature of Chinese dish names,the author researches for the translating method systematically. The article focus on how to find out the perfect translating strategy through words selection, replacement,addition and deletion,expansion and compression. Based on the experience of real cases,the author analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of literal translation,free translation,transliteration,explanation and multiple translation,in order to find out the proper translating method comprehensively. The most ideal translation should be culture maintaining at the maximum,as well as foreign friends can understand and accept. Therefore,the author prefers to the multiple translation of literal translation and free translation with explanation and in the end develop to transliteration.Chapter four,herein the important position of catering culture and catering terminology,the author inaugurates a new concept of"Catering Chinese",studies on its teaching objectives,method and curriculum setting, analyzes inspiration of the study on English translation. In this chapter,the author proposes Chinese dish names teaching as a subject of teaching Chinese as a foreign language,taking the lexical teaching as a foundation,the cultural background teaching as a supplement. In the light of configuration of Chinese dish names,creates radioactive teaching pattern.The fifth chapter is the conclusion,summarizes the major point of the article as well as the weak points of study. Showing prospect of further study and the significance of researching English translation of Chinese dish names and its teaching,and also the Catering Chinese.
