The Study On The Evolvement Of Thai-Myanmar Relations (1988-2008)

The year of1997 is the watershed of the Thai-Myanmar relation(s1988-2008),which divides Thai-Myanmar relations(1988-2008)into two periods.The author gives some conclusions to the Thai-Myanmar relations from 1988 to 2008: from 1988 to 1997, the regime change in Myanmar brings an opportunity to the improvement of Thai- Myanmar relation; Myanmar treats Thailand as a priority in its foreign policy; the enhancement of political relations between Thailand and Myanmar is one of the conditions for comprehensive development of the Thai-Myanmar relations;the two countries'tie was under steady development.From 1997 to 2008, economic cooperation is a critical foundation for the bilateral connection; in Thai's regional strategy, Bangkok pays increasing attention to Yangon;this connection was inturbulence.The thesis analyzes the concrete development of the Thai-Myanmar relations(1988-2008), founds that the changes of global and regional situation is an crucial external element of the bilateral relation evolvement;economic interest is the source for the interaction of Thai-Myanmar relations. Besides, there are some negative factors which impact the relations between the two countries: border conflict, drug and the refugee problems on the Thai-Myanmar boundary, troubles of ethnic minority rebels in their border area. To sum up, although the coexistence of cooperation and struggle is the consistent thread of Thai-Myanmar relations, peace and the stability is fundamental trait of the two countries'relations.
