A Comparative Study Of Two Chinese Versions Of Pride And Prejudice--from The Perspective Of Feminist Translation Studies

Since the"cultural turn"appeared in the 1980s, translation and western feminist translation studies have come into combination and many achievements have been made by translation theorists and scholars in this field. One of the key words of feminist translation study is feminist consciousness, with which translators can better manage the original text and adopt feminist translation strategies to achieve a better effect when translating works(works contain many feminist elements), especially feminist works. To some extent, Chinese translation study has been influenced by western feminist translation studies, but in a less progressive way due to the impact of Chinese traditional translation standard of"faithfulness".The author attempts, by making a comparative study of the two Chinese versions of Pride and Prejudice (translated by a female translator, Lei Limei and a male translator, Sun Zhili respectively), to explore and prove the influence of feminist consciousness on the female translator and the effect of the translation. Furthermore, the author aims to discuss the defects of the female translator on the exercise of feminist consciousness, and put forth some suggestions.Through the analysis above, the author points out that only when a female translator is equipped with feminist consciousness, can she be more sensitive to the feminist elements in feminist works and demonstrate the feminist features better in her translation by adopting feminist strategies. Feminist translation can be advocated in a wider area and thus feminist translation study and practice can develop further in China as there are more and more female translators who possess feminist consciousness.
