Bian embroidery is one kind of representative embroidery in Kaifeng Prefecture and even in the whole Central Plains.Bian embroidery, which originates form Song Dynasty, combines Chinese traditional handwriting with embroidery in its original form of embroidering replacing painting. And it has a significant influence in the history of the development of Chinese embroidery.In this thesis, the author firstly analyzes the concepts of Bian embroidery and Song embroidery and states that these two concepts actually refer to the same thing which has the different names in the different periods. That is to say, these two terms are the unity from the same origin. Through reviewing concrete historical materials, the author divides the developmental history of Bian embroidery into historical periods based on the development of handicraft embroidery. Meanwhile, the author elaborates the historical background of Bian embroidery, the developmental level of embroidery, the aesthetic perception of the public as well as the developmental situation of Bian embroidery in different historical periods.Secondly, the author summarizes the theme of Bian embroidery and generally describes the process flow of traditional handcrafts. From the perspective of handcrafts and aesthetics, the author probes into the five aspects which should be paid attention to while appreciating Bian embroidery, which tells the direction for collecting and identifying Bian embroidery. Through reviewing the historical development of Bian embroidery in this thesis, the author summarizes the form of succession of Bian embroidery and also introduces the master craftsmen who inherit the career of Bian embroidery.Thirdly, based on historical documents and archaeological materials, the thesis analyzes the ways Bian embroidery spread and the impacts it had on the south embroidery after Ming and Qing dynasty, and it draws a conclusion that south embroidery in Ming and Qing dynasty, represented by Gu and Su embroidery, is an inheritance and a development of Bian embroidery. Then, the thesis exploits the social environments from the perspectives of history, geography, politics, economy, and culture to explain the origination of Bian embroidery,which reveals the factors that affect its formation and evolvement. Lastly, enlightened by the results of the on-the-spot investigation and the market-research, thesis analyzes the problems Bian embroidery meets in its development. After that the thesis raises some practical suggestions for a better inheritance and development of Bian embroidery, such as perfecting vocational education, standardizing personnel management, enhancing the industrial corporations between cities and towns, normalizing the market, promoting trade-market registration, changing sale modes, innovating science and technology, formulating brand strategy, accentuating academic research, etc. The thesis emphasizes that Bian embroidery should be market-oriented, and that Bian embroidery should maintain its inner quality so as to provide a better service for the society.
