Edvard Hagerup Grieg (1843-1907) was the famous nationalistic musician of Norway in the second half of 19th century who creates Norwegian-style art music by integrating Norway's folk music into the accomplishments of German Classicism and Romanticism. His music was not only considered as the treasure of Norway, but also enjoyed by people around the world, which had already made him a nationalistic musician of the world at his time. His life can be divided into three periods: the Copenhagen period, the Christiania period and the Lofthus period. The composer already defined his composition direction in his Copenhagen period, especially with the three important representative works he wrote in 1865, i.e. Humoresques, Op. 6, Piano Sonata in e minor, Op. 7 and Sonata for Violin and Piano in F major, Op. 8, which laid the foundation of his later compositions.In order to find out how he became a nationalistic musician from a traditional German music learner, this dissertation focuses on his personal development in the Copenhagen period, and researches into his three works which are above-mentioned. Furthermore, the research is based on the music information provided by Grieg Complete Works (C. F. Peters), his autobiography Mein erster Erfolg, and collectes, selects, translates and inducts related materials; besides, this dissertation carefully analyzes these three works. I hope this article could enrich the Chinese literature of this category, offer reference for researchers who continue relative research, and provide assistance for performance and teaching practice of these works.This dissertation is divided into four parts:Introduction: This part present the origin of the research of this dissertation and summarize the research on Grieg at home and abroad, then clarifies the purposes of the research and significances of the dissertation.The growth of young Grieg: based on related documents, this part mainly researches on Grieg's music and personal experiences from childhood to Copenhagen period in detail.The third part researches on his three representative works in Copenhagen period and focuses on the aspects of structure, melody, rhythm, mode, tonality, harmony, texture, etc. through traditional methods, and describes the creative characteristics of the works with related review and evaluation.Conclusion: this part is the summary of the research of the previous parts, concludes the factors which had impact on his three representative works composed in his Copenhagen period and discusses their general characteristics and historical significances.
