The Combination Of News Narrative And Literary Narrative

In recent years, the mutual penetration of literature and news gets more and more the concern of critics. Frequently, there is some news narrative in Literature while some literary narrative in News. Joan Didion, one pioneer of The New Journalism and famous novelist in America, is one of the masters who combine news narrative and literary narrative in her writings. However, Joan Didion is still new to the Chinese critics. So, this paper focuses on the fictions and non-fictions written by Joan Didion, using the theory of Narratology to approach the narration strategy of Didion's works and how the news narrative and literary narrative combine in them. There are five main parts in this paper:First, introduction section deals with the definition of news narrative and literary narrative, summarizes the achievements and conditions of the combination of news and literature. It also introduces Joan Didion and her works briefly.Second section deals with the literary narrative in Didion's non-fictions. In order to impress the author's comments, Didion makes a fictional narrator, disclose the inner activity of the characters from the omniscient perspectives, and then portray a lot of vivid characters by using literary techniques.Third section deals with the news narrative in Didion's fictions. In her novels, Didion use some techniques of news narrative to coincide narrator with author. The narrator unfolds the reality to readers from limited perspectives. So the novels get more close to the reality.Fourth section deals with the combination of news narrative and literary narrative through the open narrative strategy in Democracy. Joan Didion has the trans-world identity in the novel. She inserts herself into the novel as a fictional character as well as the author, and she is the first-person narrator named Joan Didion who usually communicates and analyses the material with the readers so as to complete the novel together. Joan Didion fully controls the novel without being known and directs readers to comprehend the real sense of this novel.The last part is my conclusion that the combination of news narrative and literary narrative can make a good example in writing. Joan Didion is an excellent novelist who combines the two narratives together in her writing.
