The history and the current situation of sheep & goat husbandry in Jinchang county of Gansu province were examined in this study by combining the investigation with specific measurement and data analyzing. The body weight (BW), body height (BH), body length (BL), heart girth (HG), cannon girth (CG) of Mongolian sheep and Hexi cashmere goat were measured and their performance of production and reproduction as well as the preliminary behavior of two exotic sheep breeds from New Zealand, Boderdale and Poll Dorset, were also determined. The conclusions are as followings. (1) The sheep & goat husbandry, which has a long history and play an important role in animal husbandry of Jinchang county, has been improved. Due to low inputs and low level of technology used, its economic efficiency was generally very low, compared to the other provinces or areas of China. (2) The number of high productivity sheep was smaller, compared to reasonable flock structure. The percentage of sheep and goats aged yearling, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and over 6-year was 30.36, 20.91, 17.02, 12.53, 10.14, 6.53 and 2.51 respectively, and the proportion of ram, ewe, wether was 4.17%: 86.55%: 8.98% respectively in the flocks examined. (3)The indigenous breeds grew slowly from birth to yearling. The BW, BH, BL, HG and CG of yearling Mongolia ram were 47.00%, 81.16%, 76.06%, 73.45% and 86.24% respectively to adult ram, and 61.03%, 88.41%, 86.37%, 86.70% and 90.24% respectively for the yearling ewe. The BWs of yearling bulks and does were 44.72% and 38.23% respectively to those of adult male or female goats. The average BW at slaughter (BWS), carcass weight (CW) and dressing percentage (DP) of Mongolia sheep and Hexi cashmere goats were smaller than those of meat-type breeds, even other indigenous breeds of China. The BWS, CW and DP of adult ewe in agriculture area were higher (p<0.01 or p
