Sustainable agriculture is a modem agriculture trend with sustainable development as its objective and it is the best model of agricultural development at present. It was firstly raised by western scientists based on the negative effects of modem agriculture. China has paid more attention to it and has been engaging in study and exploration about its theory and practical model. How is the sustainability of oasis agriculture, which is located in the interior in China and has relatively high level of agricultural production? This paper made an examination and analysis about the agricultural sustainability based on statistical data and investigation in Zbangye City. The research considers that with improvement of intensive and modern agriculture systems the agricultural sustainability in Zhangye City has been improved increasingly. Firstly, agricultural production has made a great progress. Agricultural condition has been improved increasingly and total yield and capita amounts of agricultural products have increased. Total yield of food increased from 202765 ton in 1983 to 313591 ton in 1996 and capita amounts of food increased from 625 kg in 1983 to 914 kg in 1996. Commodity amounts and commodity rate of agricultural products also increased year by year and marketable rate reached 64 per cent in 1996. Planting index raised from Ill per cent in 1975 to 165 per cent in 1999. Secondly, agricultural economy has achieved rapid development. Gross value of agriculture raised from 301924.3 thousand Yuan(RMB) in 1988 to 1380506.1 thousand Yuan in 1996. Capita income of farmers increased from 230 Yuan in 1983 to 2842 Yuan in 1998 and living level of farmers had been improved. The structure of agricultural systems has been adjusted. Animal stocks and processing industrials of agricultural products has been enhanced increasingly. The ratio of agriculture and animal stocks decreased from 8: 1 in 1983 to 2: 1 in 1997. The ratio of agriculture in whole economy has been decreased, meanwhile, industrials and service industrials have been enhanced increasingly. Thirdly, agricultural eec- surrounding has been improved increasingly. The area of forests and grasses has 3 been enlarged from 4.Iper cent and 2.04 per cent in 1975 to 8.8 per cent and 29.8 per cent in 1999, respectively. Fertility of soil has been improved year by year. Erosion and desirnazation of soil has been controlled effectively and capacity against diseases and pests has also been enhanced increasingly. However, there are a series of problems or potential crisis with agricultural development in Zhangye City. If these problems were not resolved, it would impact, even decline the sustainability of agriculture. These problems are:(1) shortage and waste of water resources (low utiisation ratio of water resources); (2) monotonous and ineffective food economy (irrational agriculture structure); (3) shortage of forests for protecting water resources; (4) decrease of water store through snow and ice in Qilian mountain; (5) over-load grasses, bad forests for protecting field, and weak capacity against wind disaster; (6) low utiisation ratio of land (shortage of forests and grasses), serious erosion of soil from wind and desirnazation of land; (7) irrational economy structure, lack of processing industrials of agricultural products and weak support from industrials et al. To clarify the interrelationship among problems, to find out the reasons to result problems, and to formulate th...
