Analysis of Invisible and Intangible Changes in Community Culture andTheir Impact upon Sustainable Growth of Tourist IndustryAt Tourist Destinations(Outline)Name of Graduate Student: Wang XiSpecial Field of Subject: Literature and ArtDepartment: Dept. of Chinese LanguageTutor: Professor Mo QixunBooming tourism has brought in huge profits to the destinations. Meanwhile its impact up community culture is not neglectable. In quite a few regions where tourism receives public attention on its economic profits, negative impact from "mass tours" upon community culture has been slighted. And sustainable growth of tourism in the regions is hence in hidden trouble.I. Tourist destination is a place where culture of starting point and that of reception point meet and communicate. Release of potential cultural energy from jumping-off place has imposed heavy impact upon the culture at a destination where economic development is relatively hindered. Invisible and intangible changes are emerging in the community culture, possibly dilapidating local culture and worsening "cultural and biological environment" at the destination.II. Tourism is a "double-blazed" sword. Tourist development may bring about inestimable negative effects upon the natural biology and cultural environment on which tourism is based. Sustainable growth of tourism might be endangered by non-positive changes, such as damages to historical monuments, disappearance of cultural characteristics, dissolving of traditional values, increase in crime rate concerning tourism, emergence of "neo-colonization", etc.III. Due attention should be paid to the regulative function of culture in sustainable growth of tourist industry. We should seek balance between tradition and modernism, nationality and globality, naturalism and commercialism. Also put into our consideration should be the adjustment of local inhabitants' psychology, enhancing public awareness of protecting environment and culture, establishing new concept of social development and implementing a more scientific plan for tourist development. The dissertation is focused on the invisible and intangible changes in community culture at tourist destinations and their impact upon sustainable growth of tourist industry. Plentiful in the paper are research results from domestic and international scholars as well as a large number of cases. Theoretical, verifiable and comparative methods are utilized in the research of the reasons rules for the changes. Theory and application are combined in an attempt to propose a protection model for "cultural and biological environment" at the tourist destination and the principles to adhere to in keeping the sustainable growth of tourist industry. This research is motivating to tourist boom in the western areas and promotion of social development.
