With the accelerations of urbanization and industrialiZaion inChina and the environmental quality degradation resulted from thededuction of agricultural lands in Large (medium) metropolises, wehave to rebalance the coordinative relationship between the urbanand rural areas as well as agriculture and other industries with thestrategic view of continuous development. The concept of urbanagriculture reflects the new exploration in modern agricultUre in theprocess of industrialization, urbanization and agriculturalmodernization. Urban agriculture is very crucial to the continuousdevelopment of the urban ecological economy. As the rebirth fromtraditional farming to modern agriculture, urban agriculture standsfOr the trend of agricultUral development in China's large (Medium)metropolises and a choice of great significance for the agricultUralmoderniZaion in the metropolis' suburbs.Wth the methodology of combining theories with demonstrationsand the premise of theoretical analysis on the urban agricultUre, theauthor delivers her policy suggestions on the development of urbanagriculture in Beijing in the 2l,, century based on urban agriculturecase stUdies of three different styles. The dissertaion also sums upurban aghculture development in developed countries and includesempirical case studies on Beijing's urban agriculture development.In chaPter l, theories of urban agricultUre are summarized andanalyzed. The histOrical review on urban agricultUre indicates that theprocess of urbanization is resulted in the origination of urbanagriculture. Elements such as economic growth, labor cost,techniques as well as market are all contributed to urban agriculture.The connOtation of urban agriculture is well defined and the basicfunctions of urban agriculture in economic, social and ecologicalaspects are also specifically analyzed in this chaPter.Chapter 2 summarizes urban agriculture experiences in developedcountries and China (mainland). It includes summarization andanalysis of urban agricultUre development background, developmentpatterns, and experiences from the United States, France, Germany,Netherlands, Israel, JaPan, SingaPore and Taiwan as well as fromBeijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen. China's urban agriculture shouldhave its own characteristics based on the actual conditions. To giveattentions to economic, social and ecological functions, urbanagriculture development pattems should vary in different areas, atdifferent stages and different levels.ChaPter 3 deals with the sightseeing, leisure agriculture----o takePhoenix Mountain Range as a case study. The rise and developmentof Phoenix Mountain Range relies on abundant tour resources,people's wish to be better off and effective management andpublicizing. Phoenix Mountain Range leisure agriculture'sadvantages and disadvanages are also specified through theoreticalanalysis and on spot investigations. Suggestions are also given in thischaPtef, such as quickening cultivation of talents, introducing newtechnologies and etc.Chapter 4 takes Beautiful Lands as an exemplary case foranalysis and stUdy Beautiful Land is an innovative pattern ofagriculture supported by moderr high technologies. A pattern of suchkind has played an exemplny and leading role in Beijing's ruralagriculture development. The specialty of Beautiful Lands' efficientplanting, breeding aqUaics and sighseeing agriculture are analyzedto provide experiences and inspirations for other agricultural hi-techenterprises. The existing problems are also brought forward forsuggestions and countermeasures.Chapter 5 fOcuses on the case study of Chaoyang Farm, theexample of "modem urban farm" in the suburb of Beijing.
