After collapse of the Soviet Union and conclusion of the Cold War, the basis for the cooperation between China and the United States is expanding rather than shrinking. The bilateral trade exchanges have witnessed a great increase; and the joint efforts between the two countries in combating international smuggling, drug trafficking and terrorism have been strengthened. Each of them regards the other as an indispensable partner in various fields. But at the same time, clashes and conflicts between the United States and China have been occurring now and then; and the current Sino-US relationship has been undermined by numerous turmoil factors. In recent years, series of crises between the two countries have broken out, inflicting severe negative consequences on the development of Sino-US relations as well as peace and stability of the world at large. Therefore, how to cope with Sino-US crises has become an urgent task confronting the two countries. This article analyses two cases of Sino-US crises, including the bombing of US-led NATO on the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade in 1999 and the jet collision incident between the two countries in 2001. Through the analysis of the two cases, the writer finds out that there are lots of features in and reasons behind the ways of crisis management employed by China and the United States. As Sino-US crises will take place inevitably in the future, the establishment of a more mature and practical pattern of crisis management is required, which surely needs the joint efforts of both the United States and China.
