With the influence on environmental change by man's exploitation, the problems of population, resources and environment are intensifying, which lead to remarkable land use change. The basic condition of China is large population and inadequate land. Reasonable use of land resources is important for social and economic sustainable development. The Yangtze River Delta, as the largest comprehensive industry base and traditional intensive high-yield agriculture area, plays an important role in China. The contradiction of land shortage sharpened by high-speed agricultural land occupation and uncontrolled constructional land. Taking Xishan City as a typical example of the Yangtze River Delta, regional land use dynamic monitoring is studied by RS, GIS and GPS technologies. The purpose of the study on land use change and the driving forces is to make people understand and handle the contradiction between economic development and resources protection correctly. Arable land protection should coordinate with population and economy in the future, which is valuable for other regions. The followings are studied in this thesis.1. The method of man-machine interactive interpreting and analyzing by remote sensing is introduced. Combining it with traditional interpretation, the way, which can be used to acquire the land use information exactly, effectively and quickly from remote sensing images and build the cartographic data base system of land use, is explored.2. The functions of GIS are elaborated, such as managing spatial data and attribute data, spatial analyzing and outputting ultimate maps. Spatial data and attribute data are mated into land use dynamic change data base by analyzing land use map, investigating data and statistic data. The reasons and tendency of land use change are discovered by mathematic models. The results indicate that the area of residential land, industrial land, traffic land, garden land and water are extended; the area of arable land and forest are decreased; and the main cause of arable land occupation is residential land, industrial land and traffic land.3. Based on the study of land use change, the rules of soil quality spatio-temporal evolution are studied. The results indicate that the soil quality is reduced slowly, which is resulted form regional difference of land use.4. The driving forces of land use change are approached by analyzing socialand economic factors in Xishan City . The results indicate that the main driving forces are population, economic development, policy and urbanization.
