China National Aero-Technology Import & Export Corporation (CATIC) is a state-owned foreign trade company in aviation industry. Since its establishment in 1979, she's been working as the main channel between domestic and foreign aviation industry, dealing with almost all the import and export business in the field. But nowadays more and more Chinese factories are permitted to import and export their own products by themselves, while foreign enterprises also prefer to do business directly with Chinese manufacturers. In the civil helicopter market in particular, CATIC is now facing new challenge together with chance. In this study the author aims to analyze the primary problems concerning civil helicopter markets, and then based on which the strategy of CATIC in this market is to be designed. In the first chapter, the global civil helicopter market is depicted based on sales and revenue after 1991. Chapter 2 focuses on the American market evolvement since 1969 and the reason why it has become the biggest one in the world. In Chapter 3, Chinese civil helicopter market is compared with the American counterpart in market size, usage rate and external environment. Based upon the study above, the strategies of CATIC in civil helicopter markets is given in Chapter 4. The main conclusions of this research are as follows:* Civil helicopter market in different region is in different development stage. Some regions such as America and Europe are in the mature phase, while others, including China, are still lingering in the introduction phase before rapid growth.* In the America mature market, the proportion of piston, single-engine turbine and multi-engine turbine helicopters is stable, while single-engine turbine helicopter is the obvious market trend.* The huge American market results from huge military helicopter demand, oil crisis in 1970s, government policy and etc. But Chinese market is confined by comparatively lower GDP, weak military demand, preliminary air control and powerless industry association.* Facing the keen competition, CATIC should further strengthen its competitive advantage in helicopter sales ability, extend its business line to supply service for helicopters such as Fixed Base Operation. Single-engine turbine helicopter less than 4000 kgs should have priority while CATIC develops new types. Taking the strategy mentioned above, CATIC will succeed in the future civil helicopter market.
