Taiwan Question And China-US Relations

Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's sacred territory since ancient times. In history, Taiwan had ever been invaded by Dutch and conquered by Japanese colonialists. After the Chinese people's victory in the war against Japanese aggression in 1945, the Chinese government reinstated its administrative authority in Taiwan, and the international community has acknowledged the fact that Taiwan belongs to China.As known to all, the Taiwan question was resulted from the Chinese civil war, the bipartisan political disputes and military confrontations between the Kuomintang and Chinese Communist Party. It is purely an internal affair of China. Later in particular, the Taiwan question became complicated because of intervention by the US. Just as Mao Zedong pointed out, the Taiwan question has been very complicated due to its involvement in issues domestically and internationally. As far as the US is concerned, the Taiwan question is regarded as an international issue. The US government's interference in China's internal affairs is the main exterior reason resulting in the Taiwan question.With the establishment of China-US diplomatic relations, the US acknowledges the Chinese position that there is but one China in the world and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China. But almost at the same time, a domestic legislation of the US as it was, a so-called Taiwan Relations Act was just passed and signed into law in that country. The US government continues its arms sales of both defensive and offensive weapons to Taiwan and continues securing US visas to the Taiwan authorities, thus seriously prejudicing China's national interests. In giving tit for tat to the US "double policy" on the Taiwan question, China has waged struggles "on just grounds", "to our advantages" and "with restraint" in safeguarding our Chinese national interests and maintaining the general development of China-US relationship.The question of Taiwan has always been the most important, most sensitive and most crucial issue. It has also been the biggest obstacle in the way of the healthy development of China-US relations. The Taiwan question serves the interests of both China and the US, and especially bears on China's sovereignty and territory integrity. The proper handling ofthe Taiwan question holds the key, to a large extent, to a stable China-US relationship. And to a large extent, the evolution of China-US relations will be determined by the quality of the Taiwan question settlement and serving an appropriate solution to the Taiwan question can also effectively promote the China-US relations in a healthy and stable advancement. China and the US share common interests on many issues including the mutual point on properly handling the question of Taiwan. Only the US side honors the clear-cut commitments it has made in the three joint communiques by giving up fully the "double policy" can the China-US relations enjoy a sound and steady development in the long run. And given the exterior good conditions, China will eventually achieve the solution to the question of Taiwan by adhering to the basic principle of "one country, two systems", thus realizing the reunification of China.
