The paper consists of four major parts-the first analyses thecontemporary American condition in which Dewey lived, pointing out the social great environment is the sorce of his thought; the second goes into his whole ideological systom; the third part argues the way of realizing his thoutht; the last part comes to a conclusion of his thought. The innovation of the paper is that it regards and analyses his thought as a whole, and summarizes the new characteristics of his new individual and it also considers the science in his thought as one of the ways to realize his thought.John Dewey is a very famous American educator and philosopher in pragmatism. In politics, on the basis of reformed value philosophy, he did deep research on equality, freedom, justice, democracy and the relationship between them ,which gave birth to his new thought on his democrat society. This article estimates American society, in which his thought cameinto being-the social state, the state of the scientific development, the development of pragmatism and Dewey's contribution to pragmatism. The paper lays great emphasis on his thought on his new definition of freedom and equality, and attaches great importance to the new relationship between freedom and equality, between freedom and authority, between freedom and culture. The paper also gives a look at his new approach to take his thought into effect. At the end of the paper, the conclusion was drawn that Dewey's thought on democracy served the government very perfectly, and it's inevitable for him to choose to reform the American society by ameliorating, not by violence.
