As a new commercial retail form, supermarket plays an important role in Shanghai's retail market. Under the background of the economy globalization, many overseas enterprises concerned with retail have entered China and have been challenging Chinese local retail industry. The author believes that the spatial location of such kind of supermarket in urban area is the crucial factor that determines the fate of the investment from these enterprises.Large-scale supermarket is a typical retail form in Shanghai. Firstly, the author gives a clear definition of such supermarket, makes a summary of its features and expounds its development history and the current status.Secondly, dozens of supermarkets are investigated and some of them are chosen for analyzing in detail. From this analysis, the author finds several location factors that affect the spatial layout of supermarket. These factors are local market, spatial distance, traffic condition and free competition among different firms. The research result shows that the spatial distance and traffic condition are the most important factor. Also, the author points out some location characteristics and types of supermarket.Thirdly, a location evaluating system is set up and used for judging the existing supermarkets in Shanghai. The author also establishes a forecasting system, which is suitable for supermarket enterprises to find a better spatial location in an urban area. From the point of the author's view, the system will make the spatial layout more reasonable than ever before and settle a better base for the economy construction of Shanghai metropolis.The author's researching could be helpful to the development of retail industry in Shanghai, and also benefit the development of location theories.
