| The research on the banking efficiency has been one of the main issues for the international financial sector and every supervisory authority over the last two decades. The efficiency of Chinese commercial banks aims at minimizing the input and maximizing the output. That is to say economizing the cost input farthest or promoting the maximization of returns. But commercial banks act as adjunction of our government chronically and don't take efficiency as the goal of management. Therefore, the question of efficiency doesn't exist. With the commercial reform and the establishment of commercial banks as well as the entry of foreign capital banks, the competition environment of banking system forms gradually. Efficiency has been the reality that commercial banks can't avoid. Compared with speed and extensive operation, efficiency is a more profound issue. In the long-term, the development of banking industry depends on efficiency but not speed. Now in our country, the research on the banking efficiency is comparatively weak. Therefore, the selection of research on Chinese banking efficiency has important academic and realistic meanings.This article begins with the banking reform and development and puts forward the proposition of research on Chinese banking efficiency. Subsequently, this article utilizes the basic model and improved model based on Data Envelopment Analysis to make an overall analysis on the efficiency of the commercial banks from 1997~2001. At last, some approaches to improve our banking efficiency performance and the issues requiring further discussion are made. What's new about this article lies in the following areas: it estimates a specific efficiency value including technical efficiency, pure technical efficiency, scale efficiency for Chinese commercial banks, gives answer to the problems concerned with the scale economy for Chinese banking industry, and analyzes the correlation between the stability and efficiency of banking system.
