BackgroundIrradiation of food is the use of ionizing radiations from radioactive isotopes of cobalt or cesium or from accelerators that produce controlled amounts of beta rays or x-rays on food. History of scientific research in food irradiation, evaluation , and testing spans more than 50 years. Food irradiation has been identified as a safe technology on food process. Research has shown that irradiation can be used: to destroy insects and parasites in grains, dried beans, dried fruits and vegetables, and meat and seafood; to inhibit sprouting in crops such as potatoes and onions; to delay ripening of fresh fruits and vegetables; and to decrease the numbers of microorganisms in foods. Hence, the incidence of foodborne illness and disease can be decreased and the shelf life of food can be extended. The process has been approved by more than 40 countries around the world and it has been endorsed or supported by numerous national and international food and health organizations and professional groups. Food irradiation offers a solution for addressing the growing concerns associated with food safety.PurposeThis study aims at finding differences in administration of food irradiation between China and foreign countries by analyzing status of the regulations and standards of food irradiation and the countermeasure. Through comparing standards and regulations , we want to make our policy on food irradiation . To give the advices on our regulations and standards, so that we can reassure the devel-opment of food irradiation systematically, scientifically. To protect public health, Insure the ordinary international food trade.Materials and Methods1. Materials Sources ; International and China regulations , standards and files on food irradiation, including:1) Related standards, rules, recommendations, files of codex alimenturius commission2) Standards and regulations on food irradiation in EU, USA, Australia, New Zealand and Japan.3) Standards and regulations on food irradiation in China. All of the files are valid and official.2. Method; analyses and compareResults1. Radiation sourcesEU, USA, Canada, etc adopt three kinds of radiation sources in ( ray irradiated from Co or Cs, electron beam from electron accelerator, X ray ) ' General Standard for Irradiated Foods' of CAC. In China, X ray is not included in ' Administration Regulation of Irradiated Food Sanitation'.2. Safety dosimetryThe safety dosimetry of irradiation is below 10kGy according to CAC. In 2003, the edition proscribed that only when the irradiation dosimetry above lOkGy can be demonstrated as safety and ration can this dosimetry be permitted. China also approves in this opinion, while EU , Japan and Korea dont agree with dismissing the up line of lOkGy.3. Scope and category of irradiated food3. 1 Irradiation area One opinion is unanimous agreed that irradiated food includes pre - packed food, food material and half - made food.3.2 Category of irradiated food ICGFI recommends that the followingseven kinds of food should be permitted: bean, cereals and products, nut and preserved fruit, heated meat and poultry, frozen and packed meat and poultry, spices, fresh fruits, vegetables and .aquatic products. Many countries including China had adjusted their regulations based on this principle. China has permitted six kinds except aquatic products.4. Administration on Food Irradiation4.1 Aims of irradiation CAC, USA, EU and China, etc order that irradiation is for destroy the pest in cereal, dehydrate - bean, dehydrate - vegetable and parasite in meat and aquatic products; restrain burgeon of potatoes and onions; delete the ripeness of fresh fruit and vegetables; dismiss pathogens and other depravity bacteria in food in order to reduce foodborne disease and prolong shelf life of food. At the same time, they order that the intention of replacing sanitary and health criterion of good manufacture criterion is prohibited. Bad quality food concealed by irradiation is not permit...
