The study on the enlarging enrollment spurring short-run economic growth is an applied research branch of economics of education. It belongs to the macroscopically theoretical research, and an important part of the university policy research as well. It is of great theoretical research value and relatively strong practical worth. The main purpose of enlarging enrollment is to expand the domestic demand and promote the economic growth. To some extent, the scale expansion in colleges and universities stimulates consumption, drives the developments of relevant industries and thus promotes economic growth. To what extent does the scale expansion in universities promote economic growth? On the basis of analyzing in theory, the paper analyzes empirically the correlation between enlarging enrollment and economic growth and applies relevant statistic methods to analyze the effects of enlarging enrollment promoting short-run economic growth. According to the results of analyzing, the paper puts forward corresponding suggestion on the scale expansion of higher education in China. There are five parts in this thesis as follows:Part one: IntroductionThis part introduces background and significance of this paper at first. Then according to the present research, we put forward the main research content and research approach of the thesis. There is no doubt that education has enormous influence to promote economic growth. The main reason for scale expansion in colleges and universities is to expand domestic demand, but there is obvious short-run economic color for it. However, there is still a relatively great difference in enlarging enrollment to promote short-term economic growth. Since higher education is a kind of investment, there must be two effects, overflow effect as well as crowding-out effect. Its contribution to short-term economic growth depends on how these two kinds of effects interact.Part two: Relevant theories of enlarging enrollment in higher schools and short-run economic growthIt is a theoretically main topic of this paper. At first, paper interprets the definition of enlarging enrollment, economic growth. In the meantime, we introduce theoretical foundation that enlarging enrollment spurs economic growth. The motive of the scale expansion in universities comes from promoting economic growth, and theorycontroversy adds fuel to argument. Conversely, the enlarging enrollment offers great support in practice for some radical education theories, which will drive the further perfection and development of the theory.Part three: Analysis of the effects of enlarging enrollment on short-run economic growthThis is another main topic of this paper. First, we analyze the correlation between enrollment and short-run economic growth. Then the paper comes to calculate the effects of enlarging enrollment promoting the short-term economic growth. Finally we propose some suggestions on reducing crowding-out effect. The result of analysis indicates that university expansion has remarkable influence on short-term economic growth, spillover effect as well as crowing-out effect. And both kinds of effects are comparatively obvious.Part four: Several problems to be handled in the expansion of the scale of higher education in ChinaAccording to empirical research, the paper puts forward suggestion on the development of China's higher education in scale. Though the contribution of enlarging enrollment promoting short-term economic is limited, its influence on economic growth is remarkable for a long time. Under the circumstance that the scale of China's higher education is relatively small, enrollment scale should be expanded properly. In order to maintain the sustainable development of higher education, we must properly deal with several relations in the scale enlargement of China's higher education.Part five: SummaryThis part is a summary of the thesis.
