Today in 21st century, the economic and cultural exchanges between different countries in the world are unusually frequent. As a new type of economic form emerging with the maturing development of the tertiary industry, the convention and exhibition economy has already become the new driving force of the national economy in many developed countries. Convention and exhibition economy is known as " Breads of A City" and "A window to touch the world", it can not only bring tremendous economic benefits in direct ways or in indirect ones, but also can strengthen the city's external trade and business, cultural exchanges, advance the building of infrastructure, improve the popularity of the city and optimize the structure of regional economy, therefore has received the extensive attention of various countries in the world. At incomplete statistics, the annual income of international conventions and exhibitions all around the world has reached more than USD 280billion. Developed countries, such as Germany, France, etc. benefit from their own advantages in fund, technology, etc, constituted the majority among them. Europe, U.S.A., Japan, holding the majority of trade volume with China, are also the regions Chinese enterprises go most frequently for international shows and fairs. Among the list of the top frequently visited countries by Chinese fair-taking enterprises in 2001, Germany occupies the first place with 73 items, Exceeds USA (51 items) and Japan (19 items) respectively. European countries have already become the most centralized areas for Chinese fair-taking enterprises.This thesis defines the intension and function of the Convention and Exhibition Economy, describes the basic situation and analyzes the individualities of the convention and exhibition industry in main European countries. In addition it gives suggestions on the development of convention and exhibition industry in China based on the current situation and existing holdbacks in it.Convention and Exhibition, the general name for a series collective activities of conferences, exhibitions and trade fairs, is an important form of the material and cultural exchanges of human being. The term "Convention and Exhibition Industry" refers to all the enterprises taking part in the convention and exhibition activities that interacts each other, the industry itself is an outcome when the convention and exhibition activities are developed to a certain extend and is part of the modern economic system. Convention and Exhibition Economy is a comprehensive form of economy which means to hold various kind of conferences and exhibitions, shows and trade fairs in order to promote the development of other industries like tourism, hotel, retailing, restaurant, transportation, communication, finance. Comprehensive, open and token are three main features of Convention and Exhibition Economy.Conventions and Exhibitions can be classified into different kind such as Expo, trade show, Consumer goods fair, mobile show, national trading center, etc. Germany is the country with the most advanced Convention and Exhibition in Europe. There are six giants in German Convention and Exhibition Industry: Messe Frankfurt GmbH, Messe Duesseldorf, Messe Hanover, Messe Munich, Messe Cologne and Messe Berlin, the turnover of the six companies is more than 1.44 billion Euros.Every year there are around 1400 exhibitions and 100 expositions held in France. Unlike their German counterparts, the French exhibition companies do not own the fair ground nor the fair ground owner handle any fair.Italy plays another important role in Europe in terms of the Convention and Exhibition Industry. The country is famous for holding innovative exhibitions. One important reason for this is that most fairs held in Italy are organized by the professionals and supported by relevant trade associations.Compared with fairs held in America or other parts of the world, the European Exhibitions have some distinctions.
