Impact On Configuration Of Organization By Emerging Technology--Virtual Organization's Application In Medicine R&D

From late of the last century, emerging technology represented by the information technology and biological technology is blooming worldwide. This revolution stimulates our industrial society turn to a knowledge society. Compared with the traditional technology, emerging technology is more uncertain, misty and risky. However, its high rate of return and the high rate of market share attract more and more companies and managers. At the same time, emerging technology is changing our environment, influencing our thought and behavior. It challenges the strategy, structure, operation and management of traditional organizations. This thesis emphasizes on studying how to apply the virtual thought to pharmaceutical research & development. In first part of this thesis, we discuss the influence on organizational structure made by emerging technology and emphasis on describing the definition and characteristics of the virtual organizations.In second part, combining the field of pharmaceutical research and development, the innovated concept of virtual contract research organization is introduced, based on the virtual organizations and the contract research organizations. We analyze its key thought and establish a feasible organization model according to the features of CRO. According to the goal and principles of organizational design, we discuss how to design departments and carry out position analysis in a virtual CRO. In addition , the successful operation of CRO is not only based on the perfect organizational structure, but also the safe information network, complementary knowledge network, contractual/trustful network and the streamlined business process .In third part, based on a real virtual CRO case – Fulcrum Company, the author analyzed its organizational structure, operational procedures, management mechanism and specific project operation, all of which make the organizational model of CRO more visual and concrete. In the end, combining the status quo of China's pharmaceutical industry, the author pointed out that VCRO is valuable in practice and application to China's pharmaceutical R&D.
