The Korean Peninsula locates in the core of the northeastern Asia region, so it is of great strategic importance. At the end of the second world war, the Korean Peninsula was divided into two parts artificially and became a victim of the contest for global hegemony conducted by the Soviet Union and the United States. Because of the rapid political changes of the eastern European countries and the disintegration of the Soviet Union that occurred between the end of the 1980s and the beginning of the 1990s, the North Korea's international strategic environment went worse abruptly. The balance of force on the Korean Peninsula was upset. On the purpose of safeguarding its security, the North Korea has been seeking to build its own nuclear deterrent force since it lost the nuclear protection provided by the Soviet Union.China hopes to solve the nuclear issue peacefully. On one hand, China and the North Korea has a history of brotherly friendship and China's developing goal for building a all - round Xiaokang society requires a peaceful and stable environment in and out home in the coming several decades. On the other hand, China's national comprehensive strength is enhancing greatly and China is asserting increasing influence over international affairs. As a Permanent member of the Security Council of the United Nations and a great power in northeastern Asia region, China shoulders the obligation of preserving non - proliferation of nuclear weapons and preserving peace and stability of this region.After analyzing the historical background of the formation of the nuclear issueand the attitudes related great powers hold, the author of this paper tries to propose some policies that China should adopt. The main contents of this paper are consisted of the following aspects.Firstly, he analyzes the background of the Korean nuclear issue by introducing NPT and the formation of the issue.Secondly, after discussing stands and attitudes towards the nuclear issue held by the North Korea, America and other countries, he analyzes the essence of great powers' stands and their bilateral relations based on national interests.Thirdly, in order to put forward strategic countermeasures, he expounds the stand China has been holding in its foreign policy and on the Korean nuclear issue, analyzes the unfavorable influence that the North Korea "s strategy of developing nuclear weapons may assert over China and reviews the efforts China have made in accelerating the peace course in the Korean Peninsula.Finally, he emphasizes in the conclusive section that related great powers should take active attitude to solve the nuclear issue peacefully, thus accelerating the course of building peace in the Korean Peninsula and then in the world.
