Since 1960s', multinationals began to carry out the R&D internationalization. With the improvement of international macro environment and the vehemence of competition, this phenomenon became more and more common. Especially, during the 1990s', the R&D internationalization got a rapid progress. In order to explain this phenomenon, lots of scholar and specialist do many researches about it from different view, and they got the following conclusions on the drive mechanism of R&D internationalization of multinationals:(1) the driving of market; (2) the inducing of resources; (3) supporting the production of local subsidiary; (4) the pressure from the local government. Based on the results of the formers' research, this paper analyzes this problem from the structure of market, the location collection of investment, the monopoly advantage and the income from symbiosis, and concludes that:The structure of market is another important factor that affects the oversea R&D investment besides the capacity of market. The evolution of the structure of market can provide reasonable explanation for the following R&D investment of multinationals in the same market. If the resources endowment is the first temptation of the oversea R&D investment of multinationals, the benefit from the location collection is the cause of the following R&D investment after the foundation of the first R&D institution. The multinationals' monopoly advantage in technology, capital, management and information and so on can give some reasons for the R&D investment of multinationals with advanced technology in the undeveloped countries. The power of symbiosis is a very important index to assess the ability of an organization to survive, it can explain the evolution of multinationals' investment from trade to the produce center to the R&D center, and views the evolution as a procedure of increasing of the power of symbiosis of multinationals.
