Since the fifth wave of M&A in the 1990s, the global banking industries have developed towards the direction of large-scale, international and omnipotent banks. The mixed operation of the commercial banks had already been the leading trend in the 21st century. With Chinese entrance into WTO at the end of last century, the Chinese financial institutions, especially the Chinese bank industries, are destined to participate in the global economy and to face the keen competition from the "financial conglomerate" of the western developed countries. The commercial banks still operate separately at present according to the law. Being the important part of Chinese financial market, the four stated-owned commercial banks should make an important decision on whether or not introduce the mixed operation. The study states that it is the general tendency for the stated-owned commercial banks to implement the mixed operation by analyzing of economic theories and case studies. This thesis breaks into five chapters.Chapter One firstly defines the concept of bank operation mode, and then the transition of the banking operation modes in the western countries, concludes that it is not fixed always, their changes depend on the existing environment. In Chapter Two introduces the theories about the operation modes of commercial banks in regard to the risk, operation profit, co-relations between banks and enterprises as well as the efficiency.Chapter Three analyses that the separate operation mode, being implemented by the four stated-owned commercial banks, can not cope with the operational environment now, it should be changed.Chapter Four explains that the mixed operation mode should be eventual choice for Chinese state-owned commercial banks in purpose of improving their competitiveness.By the cases of CHINA BANK and CITY BANK GROUP in Chapter Five, the study holds that the financial holding company is the best choice for implementing separate operation mode for the stated-owned commercial banks.
