This thesis is to study a thinker-Van fu, who lived in modern China.Yan fu was the first thinker who introduced western liberalism to China. He deeply understood the fundmental idea of western liberalism that individual liberty has ultimate value. Meanwhile Yan fu rejiggered western liberalism to adopt the history of modern China, and insisted that "national liberty" has a priority. Yan fu replied the way that led modern China, and put forward systematic and logically identical theory in the light of his liberty thought. Because of this point, Chinese thinker should deeply ponder Yan fu's liberfy thought during the special transformation.This thesis is composed of five parts:The first one will briefly introduce the background of modern China. Because of varieties of historical incidents, there were filled with crisis and transformation in modern China, which led to the renovation of value systems correspondingly. Just on the background, Yan fu introduced western liberalism and reformed his own liberty thought. The second one will discuss how Yan fu understood western liberalism. Thethird one will study tow liberties in Yan fu's thought-national libertyand individual liberty. After analyzing the tow liberties and their relationship, we will include that Yan fu's liberty thought was reasonable and has times-related significance. The fourth one will state that Yan fu reply how Chinese transformed modern China, and how modern China went. We also concretely discuss Yan fu's solution to politics, economy, culture. The fifth one will briefly summarize and evaluate Yan fu's liberty thought.
