The society has stepped into an information age. At the same time, public figures have entered thousands of households with the help of news media and international net. People now become interested in no matter events or trivialities. News media of all kinds are trying to enlarge the power of media supervision and ignore the public figures'right of privacy at their will in search of the increase of audience ratings and circulation. That's why "scandals" keep coming out without stop. There remain a lot of shortcomings in China's law systwm of protecting privacy. The author is trying to compare the present state of legislation in China and foreign countries, and investigate the legal rotection and limitation of public figures' right of privacy according to legal principle and social reality. The author also makes every effort to define connotation and extent of public figures'right of privacy, and eatablish the principle of protection and necessary limitation. What the author seeks is the linkage which is suitable for social development and constitutionality requirements between public figures'privacy right,legal report of news media and the necessary right to know of the public. Thus providing a useful reference for the legislator.
