Economic development and democracy always are the main themes during the modernization of developing countries. Since China adopted the Reform and Opening-up policy, China has witnessed remarkable progress in the national economy in the past three decades. Meanwhile, the impact of the economic development on China's political system is gaining increasing attention. Before the Reform and Opening-up policy was carried out, Chinese institution was characterized with the integration of political and economic systems. As a result, the economic reform and development will inevitably advance and guide the process of democratic reform. However, it should be noticed that Chinese democracy is vastly different from western democracy. The Chinese Communist Party combined the Marxism-Leninism with the practice of Chinese revolution, and based on the national conditions of China, created a series of basic political systems and concrete political mechanisms, such as the System of People's Congress, the System of Multiparty Cooperation and Political Consultation under the Leadership of the CPC, the System of Regional Autonomy for Ethnic Minorities. The road to socialist democracy with Chinese characteristics turns more and more clear, and a political model fundamentally different from western capitalist democracy has been developed. This dissertation made an attempt to study how the economic development impact Chinese democratic reform as an impellent force and provide a further evidence for the point view that Marxist theory and economic achievements create the substantial foundation for democracy.
