With globalization gaining momentum, China becomes an inalienable part of the world. Especially after the global financial crisis, people pay more attention to China. With foreign enterprises seeking cooperation with Chinese companies, foreigners working and living in China, Chinese companies pursuing their strategy of"going global"there are also more lawsuits crop up. This situation draws attention of the language experts and legal professionals. Legal English translation study boomed.However, as a newly emerged discipline legal English study only began to develop since 1980s. There are still many problems with the legal translation. Therefore to give a thorough research on how far has this discipline went, what are the features of legal English and which translation theory can best guide the translation of legal texts becomes an urging subject.This thesis focuses on the analyses of Nida's Functional Equivalent theory and the distinctive features of legal English. After a detailed description and discussion it found out that Functional Equivalent theory can be used to guide the process of legal English translation and the semantics equivalence, discourse equivalent and stylistic equivalence can be achieved.
