This thesis compares the anti-access/area denial (A2/AD) military strategy as formulated by the United States and China's Active Defense military strategy. The first chapter includes the introduction and literature review. The second chapter includes the relevant A2/AD strategic content as covered by US publications. The third chapter includes China's relevant strategic content, including China's "strategic counterattacks on exterior lines" strategy, which falls within China's overall Active Defense military strategy. The fourth chapter includes a comparison of the strategic content provided in chapters two and three. The fifth chapter includes conclusions based on the comparisons in chapter four, with the core conclusion being that China's "strategic counterattacks on exterior lines" strategy is a kind of A2/AD strategy.
