Developing a new international order and maintaining world peace and stability have been a common wish of all human beings after the Second World War. As the largest and the most influential inter-government organization, the United Nations has been playing a crucial and positive role in this respect. In accordance with the purpose and the principles of The UN Charter, the United Nations Peacekeeping Operation is formulated and developed. Since its initial operation in the Middle East in 1948, the UN Peacekeeping Operation has been active in preventing conflicts, stabilizing regional situations and rebuilding the world peace. Because of its unique contributions to world peace, the UN peacekeeping force was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1988. In this study, the focus will be on the role that Australia has played in the UN peacekeeping operations post-World Warâ…¡.The thesis consists of five chapters with Chapter 1 as a general introduction, Chapter 2 to Chapter 4 as the main body and Chapter 5 as the conclusion.The summaries of the five chapters are as follows:Chapter 1 is an introduction, in which the issue is introduced and the objectives as well as the methodology are provided.Chapter 2 briefs the definition, the characteristics of peacekeeping operation and the UN peacekeeping operations after World Warâ…¡.Chapter 3 examines Australia's policy towards UN peacekeeping actions as well as its motivations in deciding to participate. Besides, it tries to provide a clear picture of Australia's participations in different operations according to different areas.Chapter 4 explores the role played by some Australian agencies, both governmental and non-governmental, which were involved in those peacekeeping operations.The last chapter summarizes the Australian contributions to the United Nations peacekeeping operations and concludes with the possible potential challenges it may face in future peacekeeping operations and some suggestions on how to deal with them.
