Study On United Nations Peacekeeping Operations In Somalia

As an important part of the collective security mechanism of the United Nations,UN Peacekeeping Operation plays a pivotal role in maintaining world peace and stability and easing regional conflicts and turbulence.Since the end of the Cold War,major changes have taken place in the world situation.The UN Peacekeeping Operation have been transformed from traditional Peacekeeping Operation to Second Generation Peacekeeping Operation.The UN Peacekeeping Operation in Somalia(UNOSOM)has always been regarded as a typical failure case.This paper will make a systematic and comprehensive analysis of the UNOSOM,the first chapter mainly discusses the background and reasons of the UNOSOM,Mohamed Siad Barre came to power after the rapid intensify contradictions both at home and abroad,create conditions for Somalia's warlords faction for power,Somalia descended into anarchy in the country.During this period,the security situation of the whole Africa was not optimistic.The great famine and the wave of multi-party system swept across Africa,coupled with the tribalism left over from history,the African region was in chaos.The second chapter discusses in detail the entire process of the UNOSOM,including the tasks,objectives and successes of UNOSOM I,Operation Restoration of Hope and UNOSOM II.The third chapter summarizes the characteristics of the UNOSOM.From the perspective of the UNOSOM itself,the means of the UNOSOM is mandatory,the functions and objects of the UNOSOM are expanded,and the UNOSOM is long-term and tortuous.From the perspective of external factors,the active intervention of the United States,France and other major powers in Somalia out of their own interests,that also constitutes a distinctive feature of UNOSOM.The last chapter has carried on the objective evaluation of the UNOSOM,in the early days of the UNOSOM,humanitarian assistance activities effectively ease the humanitarian crisis in Somalia.The UNOSOM also triggered a profound reflection of the UN Peacekeeping Operation on compulsory means,and begun to attach importance to cooperation with regional organizations and sub regional organizations.The negative impact of UNOSOM seems to be even greater.It violates the spirit of the Charter of the United Nations and violates the principle of objectivity and neutrality that should be observed,and seriously damages the reputation of the United Nations.
