The United Nations is the most important universal international organization in the world, and it is purpose to safeguard world peace and security. Peacekeeping operations is created and led by the United Nations. It is an important means to deal with regional crises and to safeguard world peace and security. It plays a very important role in the field of international peace and security. However, with facing the increasingly complex situation of peacekeeping operations, the task of peacekeeping operations more difficult and the United Nations is no longer the only subject of peacekeeping operations. Countries are encouraged by United Nations to resolve the regional dispute by regional organizations before sue to the Security Council. UN actively promotes the cooperation between United Nations and regional organizations in peacekeeping operations to face the regional crisis together.After the world war II, regional organizations begin to join United Nations peacekeeping operations. The regional approach of Chapter VIII of the Charter include regional organizations to international security system and it identified the status of regional organizations in maintaining world peace and security, and encourages to use a regional approach to resolve disputes. It is provide a legal basis to regional peacekeeping operations. Only a few regional organizations implemented peacekeeping operations before the Cold War. After the end of the Cold War, by facing the increasingly complex situation in the region, coupled with the limited role of the United Nations, a growing number of regional organizations participate in international peacekeeping operations by their own unique advantages. The African Union, the European Union, the Organization of American States, League of Arab States and other regional and subregional organizations cooperate with the United Nations. Its made important contributions in resolving regional conflicts and maintaining regional stability.In affirming the role of regional, we must also see many problems in regional peacekeeping practice: Resources scarce and poor strength of regional organizations influence the normal operation of regional operations; The legitimacy missing of regional peacekeeping practice; Big Powers in the presence and competing interests within the regional organizations had a negative impact to the peace process; Organizations are challenging the authority of the United Nations; there are many problems within the coordinate process of regional organizations and the United Nations. These problems limited regional organizations to make a important role in peacekeeping operations. Therefore, we must to strengthen the role of regional organizations in international peacekeeping operations by strengthening self-building, improving supervision and control mechanisms of United Nations and promoting regional cooperation with the United Nations .
