2009 is the 10th anniversary of Macau returning to the motherland. In these 10 years time,Macau has experienced significant changes and challenges in terms of its political stability,legal reform,economics and social welfare of its people. Every time when there is a challenge for Macau,the motherland would give its full support to ensure the stability of Macau remains. As China grows in power,Macau people have not only felt the guardianship and protection from the motherland but also the awareness of being a Chinese and as a result their ethnic identity has also grown..Based on reviewing the influences of colonialism had on Macau through looking at its social culture,ethnic psychology and the standard of living,comparisons could be made between the Pre and Post colonialism,Macau citizens'level of understanding of China and how this level of understanding changed over time since the return to the motherland;and how Macau government has encouraged its people to learn more about China and promote patriotism. This article will also analyze Macau people's reaction on major issues or events,and how this would reflect on how Macau people's ethnic identity to China. The article would also compare Macau against places like Hong Kong,Singapore etc to confer pros and cons in terms of its government's influences on their people's ethnic identity towards their own government.The last part of this article discusses policies that China and Macau could work on,particularly on economics,culture and education issues,thus enabling Macau people's ethnic identity to grow further.
