In chapterl, the purpose of this research is described. In informational era, the location ofenterprises shows a disperse pattern. The distribution of enterprises is influenced by the Internettechnology. Knowledge and technology are important in the allocation of enterprises. Formerlocation theories cannot explain the new phenomena. This paper makes researches on industry andthe internet-based enterprises in the Shanghai metropolitan area as examples for the advancementof location theories.Chapter2 reviews the related research in China and overseas. Great amount of researches onthe location of industrial service and information industry have been made in western countries, and the research scale range from the national, the urban to the inner city. In China, many of theresearches are reviews on western researches and positive researches.Chapter3 reviews the important location theories. Web's industrial location theory andLosch's location theory are representative of traditional location theories. Based on the of Web'sand Losch's location theories, the following theories make progress. In all these location theories, the location factors considered are as following: traffic, work force, agglomeration and market.Chapter4 summarizes the change of traditional location factors and new location factors. Ininformational era, location becomes flexible because of technology, and knowledge has play anvital role in location decision-making. Material factor has a extensive meaning, and traffic > workforce and market own new and extensive meaning. Three new location factors, includingsocial-cultural > venture investment and communication network, are playing more and moreimportant role in the distribution of enterprises.Chapter5 takes industry and the internet-based enterprises in the Shanghai metropolitan areaas examples to make positive research. In Shanghai metropolitan area, industry shows a dispersetrend, and shapes three rings and "1+3+9" pattern. History, agglomeration, traffic, work force andthe influence of Internet are main location factors. As to the internet-based enterprises, agglomeration and disperse coexist, and six agglomeration areas are showed. Location of officebuildings, history, agglomeration, traffic, urban planning and the influence of Internet are mainlocation factors.Chapter6 summarizes this paper and point out the shortage. In informational era, traffic > workforce and market have broad and extensive meaning. Some arguments said that the influence ofagglomeration becomes weak, but it is not the truth. Agglomeration still plays a vital role in thedistribution of enterprises. At the same time, the influence of Internet is by and by emerging. Innowadays China, some location factors either don't appear, or don't show obvious. This paper isthe first step on the research. It needs further study.
