Land resources are valuable and rare resources. In recent decades, with the development of social economy, the problems among population, resources and environment crop up frequently, so that land utilization in all walks of life competes fiercely. Due to the predatory exploration of land resources, some areas in China have resulted in the severe devastation, even affected the structure and function of ecological system so as to incur the deterioration of ecological environment and influence the sustainable development of social economy. With a view to alleviating the contradiction between population and land resources, researchers from many countries in the world successively launched land resources investigation and land evaluation, which are considered as the scientific basis for the land planning and utilization. The scientific and meticulous evaluation of land resources is an important basis and tool to achieve its goals of sufficient, reasonable and sustainable utilization of land resources, as well as to perfectly coordinate the relationship between land resources exploration, utilization and land protection. In this paper, Zaghouan Province, Tunis as the study area, the combination of the remote sensing and GIS technologies will be applied. The remote sensing technologies on the acquiring and capturing land information and the GIS technologies on the data management and spatial analysis will give into full play in the study of land resources as a whole, seeking the application possibility of the remote sensing and GIS technologies in land suitability evaluation. Specifically, the author utilizes the remotely sensed images(including aerial photographs and satellite images) as information sources to process and capture the relevant land information containing DEM, Geomorphological features, land use and land cover and so on., at the same time, using GIS technologies to generate and manage the related spatial data in the study area and form the final evaluation units by the spatial analysis.Furthermore, the database in this study fully reflecting the land quality in the Zaghouan Province has been set up, including spatial database and attribute database. The spatial database is established using remote sensing and GIS technologies, whereas the attribute database comes from various types of data collecting, processing, analysis and field observation. The powerful functionality of GIS technologies will play a significant role in the management and analysis of the spatial and attribute data, as well as the effective linkage between the attribute database and spatial database. Finally, using the model and GIS to conduct land suitability evaluation in the study area.As for a specific land utilization type, the land utilization requirements should be analyzed to determine the selection of land evaluation factor of and build the indices system. Moreover, GIS technologies and mathematical models have applied to the study area in land suitability evaluation to assess whether and how the land is suitable for a specific land utilization type. Consequently, the quantitative and spatial distribution of land suitability has been obtained.
