The Study On Chen Duxiu's Democratic Ideology In His Later Years

Chen Duxiu, who made great contribution in China's modern history, is an influential yet complicated figure. He is also a controversial figure in the history of Communist Part of China. Since the Third Plenary Session of the 11th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, historians have conducted comprehensive study of Chen Duxiu by taking the attitude of seeking truth from facts. Particularly after China's Cultural Revolution and dramatic changes taking place in former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, while starting to face truth and reflect on history, scholars gradually have realized the profound and far-sighted insight of Chen Duxiu's democratic ideology in his later years. In this field, scholars from both home and abroad concern mainly about his intellectual insight as an ideological forerunner, for his thoughts arouse profound reflection from them. However, they do not take a systematic analysis of subjective and objective factors that generate his ideology, nor did they seek the root cause of his ideology by integrating Chen's personal experience, knowledge structure, metaphysical way of thinking, and special personality. It is a defect in this field. Chen Duxiu, as a patriot, thinker and democrat with no party affiliation in his later years, had already started to take a skeptical attitude to examine the Soviet system based on his own unique knowledge, experiences, ways of thinking and personality. Besides, he explored a series of issues about proletarian dictatorship and socialist democracy, which greatly enriched the socialist theory and made positive contribution to political theory of proletarian revolution in the world.As socialist democracy continues developing nowadays, it is important to review and make further study of Chen's exposition and inquiry of socialist democracy in his later years. This new approach contributes to the further development of the comprehensive study of Chen and facilitates the study of socialist democracy. Furthermore, it is conducive to understanding and exploring laws of contemporary socialist democracy and promoting the sound development of socialist democracy with Chinese characteristics.
