Ion Mobility Spectrometry (IMS) is a portable, sensitive, instrumental techniquecapable of trace organic analysis for drugs, explosives and environmental pollutants. In this dissertation, we present the ion mobility spectrometry developed by the third research institute of the ministry of public security. The fundamental principle and new progress of ion mobility spectrometry are presented and commented. Furthermore, its radical structure is described, especially its main bodies are described in detail. We tersely introduced the ion-molecule reactions in the drift tube. And the question of the selection of reactant is discussed. In practical application of the IMS, the changes of operation parameters, for example temperature, the ambient atmosphere pressure and drift voltage, can result in the excursion of spectrum. In order to make the instrument alarm correctly, the atmosphere pressure calibrating method are put forward on the basis of study previously. And more accurate press compensate coefficient are obtained. In this dissertation, the effect of gate pulse width and gate bias on the resolving power of IMS is also discussed. And the optimum gate pulse width and gate bias are obtained throw experiences. The drift field had been simulated, and its uniformity cansatisfy our request. Finally, the instrument was applied to some drugs and explosives detection. The spectrum and reduced mobility were acquired in 140℃. That indicates IMS can detect effectively a variety of drugs and explosives. And the reduced mobility standard database of drugs and explosives has been established.
