Regional Identify And The Transform Of ASEAN's Security Model

The regional identify is a new concept in the field of international relationship. It is a kind of intersecting concept yielded by the overlapping of regionalism and collective identify derived from cultural identify. The regional identify affect and restrain the development and the choice of regional security strategy. When the regional identify develops toward the positive direction, the nation is inclined to select the balance-of-power security in the functional phase area and cooperative security in the belong phase area. When the regional identify develops toward the passive direction, the nation may select the balance-of-power security or narrow collective security (military alliance)in a certain phase area. To make a comprehensive survey to developing history the ASEAN, it'security strategy shifting was affected deeply by the regional identify. The ASEAN's regional identify before the mind–1970s pointed to the west capitalist camp, and its security strategy is military bloc strategy. From 1975 to 1995, its regional identify pointed to the inside of the southeast Asia region and security is balance-of-power strategy .From the mid-1990s to now, its security identify pointed to the east Asia region an its security strategy is inclined to cooperative security .As for the trend ahead of its security strategy, the author thinks according to the regional identify theory that the ASEAN will continue its cooperative security with its association with countries in the Asia-pacific region deepen and the establishment of their own theory of the Asia-pacific regional identify on the contrary, if there are fights in its relations with countries in the Asia-pacific region ,it will turn back from cooperative security strategy to the balance-of-power strategy. Through benign interaction of economical association, the ASEAN deepened its collective identify with countries in the Asia-pacific identify region, but didn't form completely the Asia-pacific identify because of instable elements in development of bilateral relations .Which will influence the ASEAN's security strategy over a long time .After the cold war, peace and development have become the subject in the world, so it doesn't conform to the actual situation to launch a large-scale war and military an frontation of military bloc. Therefore, long time in the future, security strategy of the ASEAN is still with the stress on the balance-of-power strategy among great nations, but positively through benign interaction with countries, in the Asia-pacific region, especially the great nations The ASEAN seize the opportunities to change its security strategy to cooperative security strategy.
