Region cooperation is an important tendency in contemporary world. Among the developments of region cooperation, Europe integration is the earliest and the most mature. North America has also established free trade region which is gradually expanding toward the whole America.East Asia region cooperation can be traced back to the development of sub-region cooperation, the origination of Association of South East Asia Nations (ASEAN). However, as a whole, East Asia region cooperation starts very lately, until Asia banking crisis.China and Japan, both as important countries in the region, should have played important roles in the process of regional cooperation. However, the process of cooperation has been led by ASEAN. Basing on theory of Relative Gains, the thesis researches the different attitudes towards regional cooperation between China and Japan. Proposing countermeasures is one of the writing purposes of the thesis, too.The thesis consists of five chapters. The first and second chapters illustrate the theory of regionalization and the development of regional cooperation in East Asia. The third and forth chapter study two cases based on the theory of Relative Gains. The last chapter researches the reasons of the different attitudes towards regional cooperation between China and Japan and tries to offer suggestions on China's participation in regional cooperation to the Chinese government.
