The modern times in China is a process of modernization, For that, liberalism,radicalism and conservatism has their answers. Although liberalism can not fundamentally solve the problem for China and Chinese people, but the valuable exploration of liberalists left us with a significant awareness and ideology.Hu Shi is known as the representative of liberal intellectuals in the 20th century in China.By studying on hushi's liberalism ,this paper tyies to explore the efforts made by the modern liberalists for China's modernization. Hu Shi repatriated after studying in US. From the very beginning ,he hoped the New Culture Campaign could lay an innovative foundation for the Chinese politics in the field of thought,literary and arts. However, the national salvation setting overwhelming enlightenment, Hu Shi inevitablely fell into the politics, and put forward the essence of its constitutional ideals of liberalism. Faced with the real predicament, he also once attempted to fuse the Western liberalism and Chinese traditional culture ,but he failed .Based on the liberalism principle, Hu Shi proposed the individualism. He realized that "tolerance"was more important than "freedom". But due to the actual of Chinese society, he also proposed that government be supervised by "pacification". However, in the background and social and political framework, neither of them come ture .Though there is paradox in hushi's thought , Liberalism for that more because that Chinese lived in force and revolution,and Liberalism couldn't find the answer.Liberalism has failed, but Hu Shi, as a liberalist leave the 21st century, not only freedom, democracy, human rights, rule of law and the basic values of liberalism, also a liberal tradition which integrate the democracy, human rights, freedom and tolerance, advocated and practised by Hu Shi, into our life, consequently formed into a sort of life ethics.
